Job scams are among the fastest-growing types of fraud, with losses skyrocketing from $90 million in 2020 to over $501 million in 2024. The Federal Trade Commission indicates that these figures likely only represent a fraction of the actual financial harm, as not all frauds are reported. It is important to learn how to avoid job scams.
Avoid Job Scams

In our last post, we talked about how to identify job scams.  Now let’s look at how to avoid the scams and protect yourself.

Tips to Avoid Job Scams

Protecting yourself requires a proactive approach throughout your job search. These strategies will help you stay safe while pursuing legitimate opportunities.

Research Thoroughly

Before applying to any position, investigate the company extensively. Search for their official website, social media presence, and reviews from current or former employees. Look up the company name alongside words like “scam” or “review” to see if others have reported problems.

Verify job postings by checking the company’s official website or calling their main number to confirm the position exists. If a recruiter contacts you, research their background on professional networking sites.

Protect Your Personal Information

Never provide sensitive information, such as your Social Security number, bank account details, or copies of identification documents, until you’ve verified the legitimacy of the job and company. Legitimate employers typically only request this information after making a formal job offer.

Be cautious about what personal details you include in online profiles or applications, especially on public job boards where scammers often search for potential victims.

Never Pay for a Job

Remember this golden rule: legitimate employers never ask job candidates to pay for anything. Whether it’s training materials, equipment, background checks, or processing fees, any request for upfront payment is a clear red flag.

If someone claims you need specific software or equipment, legitimate companies either provide these items or allow you to use your existing tools.

Verify Job Postings on Reputable Platforms

Stick to well-known, reputable job boards that verify employers and screen postings. Sites like USAJOBS for federal positions and CareerOneStop for general job searching maintain higher standards for listings.

Be extra cautious with jobs found on social media platforms or through unsolicited messages, as these channels have fewer verification processes.

Trust Your Instincts

If something feels off about a job opportunity, trust your gut. Scammers often create pressure situations or use emotional manipulation to prevent you from thinking clearly and rationally. Take time to research and consider any opportunity that seems unusual or too good to be true.

What to Do If You’ve Been Scammed

If you realize you’ve fallen victim to a job scam, act quickly to minimize damage and protect yourself from further harm.

Immediate Steps

Stop all communication with the scammer immediately. Block their phone numbers, email addresses, and social media accounts to prevent further contact.

If you’ve shared financial information or sent money, please get in touch with your bank or credit card company immediately. They can help monitor your accounts for suspicious activity and potentially recover stolen funds.

Report the Scam

File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or call 1-877-382-4357. This helps authorities track scam patterns and potentially catch the perpetrators.

Report the incident to the job board or platform where you found the listing, as they can remove the fraudulent posting and warn other users.

Protect Your Identity

If you shared personal information like your Social Security number, consider placing a fraud alert on your credit reports with all three major credit bureaus. Monitor your credit reports closely for any unauthorized accounts or activity.

Change passwords on any accounts that might have been compromised, and enable two-factor authentication where possible.

Resources for Safe Job Searching

Finding legitimate employment opportunities doesn’t have to be overwhelming. These trusted resources can help you search safely:

Government Job Sites: USAJOBS.gov offers access to verified federal employment opportunities with a reduced risk of scams.

Established Job Boards: CareerOneStop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, offers hundreds of thousands of legitimate job listings, as well as links to state employment programs.

Professional Networks: LinkedIn and industry-specific job boards typically have better verification processes, though you should still exercise caution.

Local Resources: State employment offices, career centers, and nonprofit organizations often provide job search assistance and can help verify opportunities.

Your Path to Safe Job Searching

Job scams may be prevalent, but they don’t have to derail your career search. By staying informed about common tactics, recognizing warning signs, and adhering to safe job searching practices, you can focus your energy on finding genuine opportunities that align with your skills and goals.

Remember that legitimate employers want to find qualified candidates just as much as you want to find good jobs. They’ll be patient with your questions and happy to provide the information you need to make informed decisions about your career.

Stay vigilant, trust your instincts, and don’t let scammers discourage you from pursuing your professional dreams. You have the power to recognize warning signs and avoid scams. The right opportunity is out there waiting for you.
